Questions About Swim Meets
How do I sign up or "declare attendance" for a meet?
Click Here to view Meet Sign Up instructions.
How do I sign out of a meet?
The default status for your swimmers is "uncommitted" or NOT attending any meets. If you never sign into the meet you don't have to "sign out" of it. If you commit to a meet and later change your mind, go to Meets>Meet Sign Up and follow steps 1-3. At step 3 change the pull down to "No, thanks (your swimmers name) will not attend this event".
Is it a big deal if we don't show up for a meet that we said we would attend?
Yes! A common mistake that families make who are new to the swim team is to not show up for a meet without officially signing out (declaring you will NOT attend). Be warned, if you do not show up to a meet you said you would attend, your swimmer(s) will not be allowed to participate in the next meet. The coaches need time to change the swimmer line-up to accomodate missing swimmers. The team can lose points if a swimmer is absent and a replacement is not found in time. It is especially disastrous if your swimmer has been assigned to a relay team and doesn't show up. This is because the other three swimmers on the relay team can be disqualified if a replacement swimmer is not found in time. In the chaos of a large swim meet, missing swimmers often go unnoticed until the very seconds before an event is to begin. It is extremely disruptive for coaches, parent volunteers, and even kids to go through the panic situation of discovering a missing swimmer and finding a replacement on the fly. Please, please, don't do this! If a swimmer suddenly becomes ill in the hours before a meet, try to notify the coaching staff as soon as possible. If you can't reach any coaches, send word with another family who is going to the meet. Also note that when a parent volunteer doesn't show up for an assigned shift at a meet, this is also very disruptive and puts a burden on other parent volunteers.
How do swim meets work, what should we expect, what should we bring, how they are scored?
Please read the team handbook. It’s not very long and it has answers to every kind of swim meet question.
Can I talk to the coaches during a swim meet?
Swim meets are a bit like a Tetris game. The coaches have pieces falling at them at ever increasing speeds. Not only are they paying attention to the race in the water, but they have their eyes on the next heats of that event, they are giving feedback to swimmers who just emerged from the water, they are paying attention to several lanes at a time, they are trying to remember to look at the scoreboard at the exact right moment to see places and times, and they are keeping track of the team's overall performance at the meet. It's really not advisable to speak with the coaches at the meets unless there is some kind of emergency or issue that directly and immediately pertains to one of the next events.
